Calculating EV (Electric Vehicle) mileage, more accurately referred to as efficiency, involves determining how far your EV can travel per unit of energy consumed (kilowatt-hour or kWh). Here's how:

1. Determine the Distance Traveled:

  • Decide on the distance for which you want to calculate the efficiency. This could be a recent trip, your daily commute, or any other defined route.

2. Record Energy Consumption:

  • Note the amount of energy (kWh) your EV consumed to travel that distance. Many modern EVs display this information on their dashboard or through a companion app. You might need to record the starting and ending battery percentages and calculate the kWh used based on your battery's capacity.

3. Apply the Formula:

  • The formula for calculating EV efficiency is:

    Efficiency (kilometers per kWh or miles per kWh) = Distance (kilometers or miles) / Energy Consumed (kWh)

Example:

Let's say you drove your EV 200 kilometers and consumed 20 kWh of electricity.

Efficiency = 200 km / 20 kWh = 10 km/kWh

This means your EV achieved an efficiency of 10 kilometers per kilowatt-hour on that trip. If you're in the US and working in miles, the process is identical, just using miles for distance.

Factors Affecting EV Mileage (Efficiency):

  • Driving Style: Aggressive acceleration and hard braking consume more energy.
  • Speed: Higher speeds increase aerodynamic drag, requiring more power.
  • Terrain: Driving uphill requires more energy than driving on flat surfaces.
  • Temperature: Extreme temperatures can affect battery performance and increase energy consumption for heating or cooling.
  • Tire Pressure: Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance.
  • Load: A heavier load requires more energy.
  • Use of Accessories: Using the air conditioner, heater, or other accessories consumes energy.

  • Track Performance: Monitor your EV's performance over time and identify factors affecting efficiency.
  • Compare with Others: Compare your EV's efficiency with other EVs or against manufacturer estimates.
  • Estimate Range: Use your efficiency to estimate how far you can travel on a full charge.
