How to Add a Shadow Effect to a Chart Element in Excel?

Published in Excel Chart Formatting 3 mins read

Adding a shadow effect to a chart element in Excel typically involves selecting the element and accessing the formatting options to apply a shadow preset.

To enhance the visual appeal and depth of your Excel charts, you can easily add shadow effects to various elements like data series, plot areas, or the chart area itself. This is commonly done through the formatting options available for chart elements.

Selecting the Chart Element

Before applying any formatting, you need to select the specific element you want to add a shadow to. This could be:

  • A data series: (e.g., the bars in a bar chart, the lines in a line chart)
  • The plot area: (the background behind the data)
  • The chart area: (the entire chart background)
  • Axis labels or titles: (though shadows are less common here)

Simply click directly on the chart element to select it.

Applying the Shadow Effect

Once the element is selected, you can access its formatting options. The most common way is to:

  1. Right-click the selected element.
  2. Select Format [Element Name] (e.g., Format Data Series, Format Plot Area). This will open the Format pane on the right side of your Excel window.

Within the Format pane, you will find various categories for formatting. Look for the Effects category, often represented by an icon resembling a pentagon or a star.

Inside the Effects options, you will see a section for Shadow.

Here's how to apply a shadow using presets:

  • Expand the Shadow section.
  • Click on the Presets button. This button displays a gallery of predefined shadow styles.
  • Select a desired shadow preset from the gallery. For example, you can select the Offset Diagonal Bottom Right preset, as shown in the reference, to apply a subtle shadow that appears diagonally offset below and to the right of the selected element.

Choosing a preset is a quick way to apply common shadow styles.

Customizing the Shadow (Optional)

After applying a preset, or instead of using one, you can further customize the shadow effect using the other options available in the Shadow section of the Format pane:

  • Color: Change the color of the shadow.
  • Transparency: Adjust how visible or opaque the shadow is.
  • Size: Make the shadow larger or smaller relative to the element.
  • Blur: Soften or sharpen the edges of the shadow.
  • Angle: Change the direction from which the "light source" is coming, affecting where the shadow falls.
  • Distance: Adjust how far the shadow is offset from the element.

By using these options, you can fine-tune the shadow to perfectly match the design of your chart and overall document.

Adding shadows is a simple yet effective way to make key chart elements stand out and give your data visualizations a more professional look.
