How Do I Add Margin in Excel?

Published in Excel Formatting 2 mins read

To add margins in Excel, you'll primarily work within the Page Layout view. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Page Layout Tab: Click the "Page Layout" tab in the Excel ribbon.

  2. Find the Page Setup Group: Within the Page Layout tab, locate the "Page Setup" group.

  3. Click Margins: In the Page Setup group, click the "Margins" button.

  4. Choose a Predefined Margin: Select from the predefined margin options: "Normal," "Wide," or "Narrow." Excel will immediately apply the selected margins to your worksheet.

    • Normal: This is the default margin setting.
    • Wide: This option provides larger margins.
    • Narrow: This option minimizes the margins.
  5. Custom Margins (If needed): If the predefined options don't meet your needs, select "Custom Margins..." at the bottom of the dropdown menu.

    • Page Setup Dialog Box: This will open the "Page Setup" dialog box, specifically on the "Margins" tab.
    • Specify Margin Values: Here, you can enter precise values (in inches or centimeters, depending on your regional settings) for the top, bottom, left, and right margins. You can also adjust the header and footer margins.
    • Centering Options: Within the "Margins" tab of the Page Setup dialog box, you can also choose to center your worksheet horizontally and/or vertically on the printed page.
    • Click OK: Once you've made your margin adjustments, click "OK" to apply them.

Tips and Considerations:

  • Print Preview: Always use Print Preview (File > Print) to see how your margins will affect the printed output. This allows you to make adjustments before printing.
  • Last Custom Setting: If you have used custom margins previously, Excel will store that setting as "Last Custom Setting." This allows you to quickly reapply those settings.
  • Header and Footer Margins: Remember to adjust the Header and Footer margins if you're using headers and footers, ensuring they don't overlap with your content.
  • Printer Driver: In rare cases, your printer driver might override the margins you set in Excel. If you encounter inconsistencies, check your printer settings.
