How do I turn off auto style in Excel?

Published in Excel Formatting 2 mins read

To turn off auto style, or more specifically, certain auto formatting features like those found in the AutoFormat As You Type settings in Excel, you need to access the Excel Options menu and uncheck the desired options.

These settings control features that automatically change the appearance of your text or data as you type, such as replacing straight quotes with smart quotes or formatting certain numbers.

Steps to Turn Off Auto Formatting

Based on the standard Excel options menu structure, follow these steps to access and modify auto formatting settings:

  1. Click File: Open the Excel application and click on the "File" tab in the top-left corner of the window.
  2. Click Options: From the File menu, select "Options" located typically towards the bottom of the left-hand navigation pane. This will open the "Excel Options" dialog box.
  3. Click Proofing: In the Excel Options dialog box, click on "Proofing" in the left-hand navigation pane.
  4. Click AutoCorrect Options: Within the Proofing settings, click the "AutoCorrect Options..." button. This opens the "AutoCorrect" dialog box.
  5. Select the AutoFormat As You Type Tab: In the AutoCorrect dialog box, click on the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab.
  6. Uncheck the Boxes: This tab contains various options for automatic formatting as you type. To turn off specific auto style features, uncheck the boxes next to the items you do not want Excel to format automatically.
  7. Click OK: After unchecking the desired options, click "OK" in the AutoCorrect dialog box, and then click "OK" in the Excel Options dialog box to save your changes.

By unchecking the boxes in the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, you disable those specific auto formatting features.
