How do I pin a row in Excel?

Published in Excel Navigation 2 mins read

To pin a row in Excel, which is more accurately called "freezing" a row, follow these steps:

Freezing the Top Row

Freezing the top row ensures that it remains visible while you scroll down through your data. This can be very helpful when you have column headers in the first row. Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the View Tab: First, click on the View tab in the Excel ribbon.

  2. Find the Freeze Panes Dropdown: In the Windows group, you will find the Freeze Panes dropdown arrow. Click on it.

  3. Select Freeze Top Row: From the dropdown menu, select the Freeze Top Row option.

    • Excel will now show a thin line below the frozen top row. This visual cue indicates where the frozen pane begins.
    • As you scroll down, the top row will remain in place, allowing you to easily see the headers of your columns, no matter how far down you scroll.

Considerations

  • Freeze First Column: In a similar way, you can choose to freeze the first column using the "Freeze First Column" option in the same menu. This is very helpful when you have row headers in the first column and you want to see the row headers while scrolling horizontally.
  • Freezing Multiple Rows or Columns: If you want to freeze multiple rows, or a combination of rows and columns, you can do this by selecting a cell just below and to the right of the rows and columns you want to freeze and then selecting the general "Freeze Panes" option.
  • Unfreezing Panes: To undo the freezing, click on the Freeze Panes dropdown and select Unfreeze Panes.
Step Action
1 Go to the View tab
2 Click Freeze Panes dropdown arrow
3 Select Freeze Top Row or Freeze First Column

Using the "Freeze Panes" options provides a helpful way to keep important data or titles visible while navigating larger Excel worksheets. Remember, the thin line visually separates the frozen section from the rest of the worksheet.
