How to Apply an Eyepatch?

Published in Eye Care 2 mins read

To apply an eyepatch, gently and securely position it over the affected eye after ensuring both eyes are closed.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to properly apply an eyepatch:

  1. Preparation: Gather your supplies: an eyepatch (eye pad), hypoallergenic tape, and optionally, a protective eye shield.
  2. Positioning: Ask the person to close both eyes. This prevents them from squinting or straining the eye while applying the patch.
  3. Placement: Position the eyepatch (eye pad) diagonally over the closed eyelids of the affected eye. Make sure it completely covers the eye area for effective coverage.
  4. Securing the Patch:
    • Apply a strip of hypoallergenic tape firmly, but gently, to the forehead, anchoring the top corner of the eyepatch.
    • Repeat this process on the cheek, securing the bottom corner of the eyepatch.
    • Use a second and third piece of tape to ensure the pad lies flat against the skin and provides adequate coverage and protection. Smooth out any wrinkles in the tape.
  5. Optional Shield (Extra Protection): For additional protection, tape a shield over the pad in the same way you taped the eyepatch. This is particularly important if the eye is sensitive to light or needs extra protection from impact.
  6. Comfort Check: Ask the person if the eyepatch is comfortable and not putting undue pressure on the eye. Adjust as needed.

Important Considerations:

  • Skin Sensitivity: Always use hypoallergenic tape to minimize the risk of skin irritation, especially if the patch will be worn for an extended period.
  • Cleanliness: Ensure the area around the eye is clean and dry before applying the eyepatch.
  • Medical Advice: Always follow the specific instructions provided by a healthcare professional regarding eyepatch use, especially if it's being used for medical purposes like treating amblyopia ("lazy eye") or after eye surgery. The duration and method of patching may vary.
  • Hygiene: Use a fresh eyepatch daily to prevent infection.
