The process of "folding" or, more accurately, everting the upper eyelid is performed to inspect the underside of the lid for foreign objects. Here's how to do it:
- Ask the patient to look down: This relaxes the upper eyelid.
- Grasp the upper eyelashes: Gently pull the eyelashes slightly away from the eye.
- Use a cotton swab (optional): Place a cotton swab horizontally against the upper eyelid, just above the tarsal plate. This provides a pivot point.
- Fold the eyelid: While maintaining a gentle pull on the eyelashes, use the cotton swab (or your thumb if no swab is available) to gently fold the eyelid upwards and over the swab/thumb. This everts the eyelid, exposing the underside.
- Inspect: Examine the underside of the eyelid for any foreign bodies.
- Return the eyelid to its normal position: Ask the patient to look up and gently release the eyelashes. The eyelid should return to its normal position. If it doesn't, gently pull down on the eyelashes.
It's important to be gentle throughout this process to avoid causing any pain or injury.
