What is the unique eye color in the world?

Published in Eye Color 1 min read

Pink or red eye color is considered the most unique and rare eye color in the world.

While eye color is generally determined by the amount of melanin in the iris, some rare genetic conditions can lead to unusual eye colors. Here's a breakdown of what makes pink/red eyes unique:

  • Albinism: Individuals with albinism often lack significant melanin production. In some cases, this can result in very pale blue or even pink/red eyes. The red appearance comes from the blood vessels within the iris becoming visible due to the lack of pigment. According to the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, albinism affects approximately one in 20,000 people.

  • Not truly an iris color: It's important to note that the "pink" or "red" color isn't a pigment in the iris itself. Rather, it's the appearance of blood vessels due to the absence of melanin.

While heterochromia (having different colored eyes) is also rare, it's not as uncommon as the red or pink eye color associated with certain types of albinism.
