How many lenses are available for cataract surgery?

Published in Eye Health 1 min read

There are generally four main types of lenses available for cataract surgery.

While numerous manufacturers produce intraocular lenses (IOLs), and each boasts unique materials and characteristics for their products, these lenses broadly fall into one of four categories:

  • Monofocal Lenses: These lenses provide clear vision at one distance, typically far. Most patients will require glasses for near and intermediate tasks.

  • Toric Lenses: These lenses correct astigmatism, a common refractive error. They are available in both monofocal and multifocal options.

  • Multifocal Lenses: These lenses aim to provide clear vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far), potentially reducing or eliminating the need for glasses.

  • Light Adjustable Lenses (LALs): These lenses can be adjusted after implantation using UV light to fine-tune vision.

Therefore, while the specific number of IOL models available is vast and constantly evolving, the lens types available generally fall into the four categories listed above. The selection of the most appropriate lens depends on individual needs, lifestyle, and eye health.
