How Do You Steam Fabric?

Published in Fabric Care 2 mins read

Steaming fabric involves applying steam from a garment steamer directly to the material to remove wrinkles or refresh it.

The core action of steaming fabric is to move the steamer directly against the material once the device is ready. There are two main types of steamers, and how they produce steam differs slightly before you begin the application process.

Understanding Different Steamer Types

The way your steamer produces steam determines the first step before you apply it to the fabric:

  • Handheld Steamers: For these devices, you need to press the steam button to release steam. This gives you control over when and how much steam is emitted.
  • Upright Steamers: These larger units will produce steam continuously once heated up and turned on, without requiring you to hold a button.

The Fabric Steaming Process

Once your specific type of steamer is producing a steady flow of steam, the actual steaming action on the fabric is straightforward:

  1. Ensure Steam is Ready: Confirm your handheld steamer button is pressed or your upright steamer is continuously emitting steam.
  2. Apply to Fabric: Once the steamer is producing steam, move the steamer against the fabric.
  3. Choose Your Direction: You can move the steamer in any direction, top to bottom or sideways. The direction isn't as critical as ensuring contact.
  4. Maintain Contact: The important thing is that you hold the steamer against the fabric. This allows the heat and moisture from the steam to penetrate the fibers and relax them effectively.

By following these steps and holding the steamer directly against the fabric as it produces steam, you can effectively remove wrinkles and refresh garments.
