How to Iron Pleated Silk?

Published in Fabric Care 2 mins read

Ironing pleated silk requires careful attention to preserve the pleats. Here's a guide on how to do it correctly:

Preparation

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • An ironing board
  • An iron set to a low or silk setting.
  • A pressing cloth or thin cotton fabric to protect the silk.
  • Optional: straight pins.

Ironing Process

  1. Prepare the pleats:

    • Begin by gently straightening out the pleats so they lay flat against the ironing board.
    • Use your free hand to stretch the material slightly while you iron. This will help keep the pleats in place and avoid creasing.
  2. Secure the pleats (optional):

    • If you find the pleats are moving around, you can use straight pins to secure them to the board. Place the pins along the edge of the pleats, ensuring they are outside the area you'll be ironing.
    • Important: Avoid ironing directly over the pins, as they can damage your iron or the fabric. Pull them out as you go.
  3. Protect the silk:

    • Place a thin pressing cloth or cotton fabric over the area of the silk you want to iron. This will protect the delicate silk from direct heat.
  4. Iron carefully:

    • Using your iron on the lowest setting recommended for silk without steam.
    • Press lightly on the pressing cloth. Do not slide the iron back and forth.
    • Lift the iron and move it to the next area, continuing to stretch the material.
  5. Repeat as necessary:

    • Repeat this process on each pleat until they are all ironed.

Additional Tips:

  • Iron on the wrong side of the silk.
  • Move swiftly when ironing, as silk can scorch easily.
  • Do not leave the iron in one spot too long.
  • If the pleats are very stubborn, consider having your garment professionally cleaned.

By following these steps, you can safely iron your pleated silk and maintain its delicate nature.
