Method: Transferring Designs with Gloss Gel

Published in Fabric Design Transfer 3 mins read

How to transfer a design onto fabric without transfer paper?

You can transfer a design onto fabric without using traditional transfer paper by employing a method that utilizes a gloss gel medium. This process involves applying the gel to the design printed on paper and then transferring it to the fabric surface.

This technique allows you to lift the ink from a printed image using a gel medium and adhere it permanently to fabric. It's an alternative approach to standard heat transfer methods using iron-on papers.

Here is a breakdown of the steps involved, based on a common gloss gel transfer process:

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Gather Materials.
    • You'll need your chosen fabric item (like a shirt), a printed design (usually on regular paper), gloss gel medium, a brush or applicator, and potentially water and a sponge for the peeling process.
  2. Step 2: Prep Shirt.
    • Wash and dry your fabric item. Ensure it is smooth and free of wrinkles in the area where you plan to place the design.
  3. Step 3: Apply Gloss Gel to Photo.
    • Generously apply a layer of gloss gel directly onto the printed side of your design. Ensure the entire image is covered with an even coat of gel.
  4. Step 4: Place Image Onto Shirt.
    • Carefully place the gel-covered side of the image down onto the prepared fabric. Press firmly and smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles from the back of the paper.
  5. Step 5: Peel Paper Off.
    • Once the gel has completely dried (this may take several hours, depending on thickness and humidity), you will peel or rub the paper backing away from the fabric. Often, wetting the paper slightly helps facilitate this process, leaving only the transferred ink image adhered to the fabric by the dried gel.
  6. Step 6: Add Gloss Gel Layer.
    • After the paper is removed and the transferred image is revealed, you can apply another thin layer of gloss gel over the design on the fabric. This helps to seal the image and provide a finished look.
  7. Step 7: Finish or Cut Out.
    • Allow the final gel layer to dry completely. Depending on the project, you may choose to finish the edges or cut out the design if it was transferred to a separate piece of fabric for appliqué.
  8. Step 8: All Done!
    • Once all steps are complete and the gel is fully cured, your design is transferred onto the fabric without the use of traditional transfer paper.

This method creates a durable image on the fabric, distinct from the feel of traditional transfer paper.
