How Do You Make Fabric Paint With Normal Paint?

Published in Fabric Painting 4 mins read

You can create fabric paint with normal paint by mixing it with fabric softener. A general recommendation is to use a ratio of 1 part paint to 2 parts fabric softener.

Creating Fabric Paint from Regular Paint

While using dedicated fabric paint is often recommended for the best results, it's possible to adapt regular paint for use on fabric. The key is to create a mixture that will adhere to the fabric, remain flexible, and prevent cracking or peeling after washing. Here's how you can do it:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Normal acrylic paint (or other suitable paint type - see notes below)
  • Fabric softener (liquid)
  • Mixing container
  • Mixing stick or utensil
  • Optional: Textile medium (for enhanced durability and washability)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Cover your work surface to protect it from paint spills.
  2. Combine Paint and Fabric Softener: In your mixing container, start with 1 part paint and add 2 parts fabric softener.
  3. Mix Thoroughly: Mix the paint and fabric softener together until they are completely combined and smooth. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the container to ensure even mixing.
  4. Adjust Consistency (If Needed): The mixture should be thin enough to spread easily on fabric but not so thin that it bleeds. If it's too thick, add a small amount of fabric softener. If it's too thin, add a small amount of paint. Remember that adding more fabric softener may dilute the color.
  5. Test on Scrap Fabric: Before painting your final project, test the mixture on a scrap of the same fabric. This allows you to assess the color, consistency, and how well it adheres. Let the test swatch dry completely.
  6. Apply to Fabric: Use a brush, sponge, or other applicator to apply the paint mixture to your fabric project. Apply in thin, even layers to avoid stiffness.
  7. Allow to Dry: Let the painted fabric dry completely, usually for 24 hours or according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.
  8. Heat Set (Optional): Heat setting helps the paint adhere better to the fabric and improves washability. Iron the painted area on low heat, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the painted fabric, for 2-5 minutes. Follow paint manufacturer's instructions regarding heat setting.

Tips and Considerations:

  • Type of Paint: Acrylic paint is generally recommended for this method due to its flexibility and durability. However, other types of paint may work, but always test on scrap fabric first.
  • Fabric Type: Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and silk tend to work best. Synthetic fabrics may not absorb the paint as well.
  • Color Dilution: Adding fabric softener can sometimes lighten the color of the paint. Consider using a slightly darker shade of paint than you desire.
  • Washing: Hand washing is recommended for painted fabric to prolong its life. If machine washing, turn the garment inside out and use a gentle cycle.
  • Textile Medium: For improved washability and durability, consider adding a textile medium to the paint mixture. This is available at most craft stores. Follow the instructions on the textile medium packaging for proper usage. It generally replaces some (or all) of the fabric softener in the above steps.

By following these steps, you can successfully create fabric paint from normal paint and add your personal touch to clothing, home decor, and other fabric items.
