How to Mix Paint for Denim?

Published in Fabric Painting 2 mins read

To mix paint for denim and keep it soft, use a 1:1 ratio of 2-Soft to paint.

After painting your denim, heat-setting is crucial for durability. Here's a breakdown:

  • Mixing the Paint: Combine Angelus Paint with 2-Soft in a 1:1 ratio. This helps the paint penetrate the denim fibers effectively, leading to a more flexible and lasting design.
  • Application: Apply the paint mixture to your denim item. Multiple thin coats are often better than one thick coat.
  • Heat-Setting (REQUIRED): Use a heat gun at 300ºF (approximately 150°C) for 3-5 minutes to heat-set the painted product. Consistent, even heat distribution is important to properly cure the paint. This step is essential to ensure the paint adheres properly and remains flexible with the denim.

Why is this important?

Using 2-Soft allows the paint to bond with the denim instead of just sitting on top, preventing cracking and peeling. Heat-setting further reinforces this bond, making the painted design washable and durable. Failing to heat-set will likely result in the paint flaking off with wear and washing.
