How Far Can a Human Fall?

Published in Fall Survivability 1 min read

The question "How far can a human fall?" is best answered by addressing the survivability of falls from different heights. While there's no definitive "limit" to how far a human can fall, the likelihood of survival decreases dramatically with increasing distance.

According to Demetrios Demetriades, a professor of surgery at the Kerk School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, falls exceeding a certain height are typically fatal.

  • Lethal Falls: "If someone falls more than 60 feet [18 m], this is usually lethal..."
  • Miraculous Survival: "...and it is extremely unlikely, or a miracle, if a patient falls from higher than 80 feet [24 m] and survives."

In other words, the probability of surviving a fall significantly diminishes beyond 60 feet (18 meters), and survival beyond 80 feet (24 meters) is considered exceptionally rare.
