High heels for women were invented around the 1400s, during the Middle Ages in Turkey.
While both men and women wore platform shoes called pattens to protect their feet from mud and debris, high heels specifically designed for women, known as chopines, emerged around this time. Therefore, while elevated footwear existed previously, the invention of high heels specifically for women can be traced back to 15th-century Turkey.
