What is a Flange Rivet?

A flange rivet, also known as a large flange rivet, is a type of pop rivet distinguished by its wider head. This larger head spreads the load over a greater surface area, making it particularly suitable for use with softer or more brittle materials.

Key Characteristics of Flange Rivets:

  • Larger Head: This is the defining characteristic. The wider flange provides increased bearing surface.
  • Pop Rivet Type: Like other pop rivets, it's a single-piece fastener that's installed from one side of the materials being joined.
  • Blind Fastening: Flange rivets are used when you only have access to one side of the material.
  • Material Compatibility: Excellent for materials that are easily damaged or deformed by concentrated pressure.

How Flange Rivets Work:

Flange rivets are installed using a rivet gun. The rivet is inserted through pre-drilled holes in the materials being joined. The rivet gun then pulls the mandrel (a pin inside the rivet) until it snaps off, causing the body of the rivet to expand and clamp the materials together. The expanded body, along with the wide flange head, creates a secure and durable joint.
