When Do Couples Go for IVF?

Published in Fertility Treatment 3 mins read

Couples typically consider In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) when other fertility treatments have been unsuccessful, or when specific medical conditions make IVF the most likely path to pregnancy.

Reasons for Considering IVF

IVF is often recommended when:

  • Fallopian tube damage or blockage: If the fallopian tubes are damaged or blocked, it prevents the egg from traveling to the uterus, making natural conception impossible.
  • Moderate to severe endometriosis: Endometriosis can distort the pelvic anatomy, impacting fertility.
  • Pelvic adhesions: Scar tissue in the pelvis can interfere with egg retrieval and implantation.
  • Male factor infertility: When the male partner has issues with sperm count, motility, or morphology, IVF can help overcome these obstacles, sometimes in conjunction with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
  • Unexplained infertility: If the cause of infertility remains unknown after comprehensive testing, IVF may be considered.
  • Advanced maternal age: As women age, their egg quality and quantity decline. IVF can improve the chances of pregnancy.
  • Genetic disorders: Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) during IVF can screen embryos for specific genetic disorders before implantation.
  • Failed IUI cycles: If several cycles of intrauterine insemination (IUI) have been unsuccessful, IVF might be the next logical step. IUI is less likely to succeed when, as the reference states, the chances of pregnancy with IUI are low, but relatively higher with IVF.

When to Go Straight to IVF

In certain situations, couples may consider skipping less aggressive treatments like IUI and proceeding directly to IVF. This is typically when the likelihood of success with IUI is low, but IVF offers a significantly better chance of pregnancy. Examples include:

  • Severe fallopian tube blockage or absence
  • Severe male factor infertility
  • Advanced maternal age with diminished ovarian reserve
  • History of multiple failed IUI cycles
  • Significant endometriosis

Deciding When to Pursue IVF

The decision to pursue IVF should be made in consultation with a fertility specialist. They will assess your individual circumstances, conduct necessary tests, and discuss your treatment options to determine the most appropriate course of action. Factors such as age, medical history, previous fertility treatments, and personal preferences will all play a role in the decision-making process.
