How to Add Collaborators in Figma

Published in Figma Collaboration 3 mins read

Adding collaborators in Figma is a straightforward process that allows others to view or edit your design files.

To bring others onto your Figma projects, you follow a simple workflow to invite them via email and define their access level.

Here are the key steps to add collaborators in Figma, based on navigating the file browser:

  1. Open the team page in the file browser. Start by going to your Figma file browser and navigating to the specific team and project where the file you want to share is located.
  2. Click Share in the top-right corner. While viewing the file in the file browser (or sometimes from within the editor), find and click the Share button, which is typically positioned in the upper-right area of the interface.
  3. Enter their email address in the invite field. A sharing dialog will appear. In the designated input field, type the email address of the person you wish to invite.
  4. Click to select their permissions. Before sending the invite, choose the level of access you want the collaborator to have. This determines whether they can only view the file or also make changes.

After entering the email and selecting permissions, you can send the invitation. The person will receive an email link to access the file with the permissions you assigned.

Understanding Collaboration Permissions

Choosing the correct permission level is crucial when adding collaborators. Figma offers different permission types:

  • Can view: Collaborators can open and inspect the design file. They can see layers, dimensions, and leave comments, but they cannot make any modifications to the design elements or settings. This is ideal for stakeholders, clients, or developers who need to see the design but not edit it.
  • Can edit: Collaborators have full editing access to the file. They can modify design elements, add new content, move objects, change settings, and collaborate directly on the canvas alongside other editors. This permission is typically granted to fellow designers or team members actively working on the project.

Selecting the appropriate permission ensures that team members have the necessary access to contribute while maintaining control over who can make changes to the design.

By following these steps and understanding permission levels, you can effectively manage collaboration on your Figma files.
