How do you clip content in a Figma group?

Published in Figma Design 1 min read

You can clip content in a Figma group using the "Clip content" option, which essentially masks the content within the boundaries of the group's frame.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Select the group: Click on the group in Figma that you want to apply the clipping mask to.
  2. Enable Clip Content: In the right-hand sidebar, under the "Layer" section, find the "Clip content" checkbox. Check this box.

Now, any content within the group that extends beyond the group's bounding box will be hidden (clipped).

Key Considerations:

  • Frame Behavior: Clipping only works properly if the group is also acting as a frame. Figma groups can behave like frames, defining boundaries for content inside.
  • Visibility: Make sure the objects you intend to be clipped are inside the group in the layers panel.
  • Alternatives: While "Clip content" is the standard method, you could also create a vector mask and use boolean operations for more complex masking requirements. However, for simple clipping within a rectangular boundary, "Clip content" is the quickest and easiest solution.
