You can easily copy a layer's effect settings in Figma from the right sidebar to apply them to other layers or objects.
Copying Layer Effects in Figma
To copy the effects applied to a specific layer or object in Figma, follow these steps based on the information available in the Effects section of the right sidebar:
-
Select the Layer: First, select the layer or object that has the effects you want to copy.
-
Locate Effects: Go to the Effects section in the right-hand properties panel.
-
Access Settings: Click on the Effect settings icon (often represented by a sun or gear symbol) next to the specific effect you want to copy settings from. This will open the effect's detail panel.
-
Clear Selection (Important Step from Reference): Press the Esc key on your keyboard. This action is specified in the reference as a step before copying and helps ensure the entire effect setting is ready to be copied, rather than text within the settings field.
-
Use the Copy Shortcut: With the effect panel open and after pressing Esc, use the standard keyboard shortcut to copy the settings.
- Mac: ⌘ Command C
Once copied, you can then select another layer or object and use the paste shortcut (like ⌘ Command V on Mac or Ctrl + V on Windows) to apply the copied effect settings.
This process allows designers to maintain consistency across multiple elements by quickly transferring effect styles such as drop shadows, inner shadows, layer blur, and background blur without manually recreating them.
