How do I remove a layer from a mask in Figma?

To remove a mask layer in Figma, use a keyboard shortcut after selecting the mask.

Removing a Mask in Figma

Here's how to remove a mask, effectively detaching the masked layer:

  • Select the Mask: First, click on the mask itself, the frame or shape that is acting as the mask in your design.

  • Use the Keyboard Shortcut:

    • Mac: Press ⌃ Control + ⌘ Command + M simultaneously.
    • Windows: Press Ctrl + Alt + M simultaneously.

This action will remove the mask from the layer, effectively unmasking it. The layers that were previously under the mask will now be visible independently, and the mask layer will be detached.

Example

Let's say you have a circle masking a photograph.

  1. You select the circle that's acting as the mask.
  2. You use the appropriate shortcut (Mac or Windows).
  3. The photo is now no longer masked by the circle and both layers are independent.

By using the keyboard shortcut, you directly remove the masking relationship between layers and don't need to navigate through menus.
