You add a vector point in Figma primarily by using the Pen tool and clicking on your canvas. Each click places a new point that can define a shape or path.
Vector points, also known as nodes, are fundamental to creating and editing vector graphics in Figma. They are the anchor points connected by lines (segments) that form vector paths.
Using the Pen Tool to Add Vector Points
The most common way to add vector points is by using Figma's Pen tool. Follow these steps, incorporating the process described in the reference:
- Prepare Your Canvas: Start by preparing your workspace. You can create a new frame in your Figma project, although adding points can be done directly on the canvas too.
- Activate the Pen Tool: Press the P key on your keyboard or select the Pen tool from the toolbar at the top of the screen (usually found under the "Shape tools" dropdown). Your cursor will change to a pen icon.
- Place the First Point: Click the location where you want to begin your drawing or path. This action places your initial vector point.
- Add Subsequent Points: Move the mouse to the desired location for your next point and click again. This places a new vector point and automatically draws a segment connecting it to the previous point, forming part of a path.
- Add Another Point (with Constraint): To add additional points, continue clicking along the desired path. As described in the reference, you can Hold the ⇧ Shift key as you place another vector point. This constraint ensures that the segment connecting the new point to the previous one is drawn at a perfect horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree angle, making it easy to draw straight lines or perfect corners.
Practical Tip: Drawing Straight Segments
As mentioned in the process (Step 5), holding down the ⇧ Shift key while placing a new vector point is incredibly useful for creating perfectly horizontal, vertical, or diagonal (45-degree) line segments.
By clicking with the Pen tool, you continuously add vector points, building complex shapes and paths segment by segment. Once you are finished drawing your path, you can close it by clicking on the initial point or press Enter
to finish an open path.
