How to Filter File Explorer?

Published in File Explorer Filtering 2 mins read

Filtering in File Explorer allows you to narrow down the files displayed based on specific criteria, making it easier to find what you're looking for. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Filter Files in File Explorer

The primary method involves using the column headers:

  1. Identify the Column Header: Determine which attribute you want to filter by (e.g., "Name," "Date modified," "Type," "Size").

  2. Click the Filter Arrow: According to the reference, click the arrow next to the information you want to filter by. For instance, if you want to filter by file type, click the arrow to the right of the "Type" header.

  3. Select Your Filter Criteria: A dropdown menu will appear, showing different options. Choose exactly what you want to see in the folder view. You can select specific file types, date ranges, sizes, or other criteria depending on the column.

  4. Apply the Filter: File Explorer will immediately update the view, hiding all the files that don't match your chosen filters.

Example: Filtering by File Type

Let's say you want to see only image files in a folder.

  1. Go to the folder in File Explorer.
  2. Click the arrow next to the "Type" column header.
  3. In the dropdown menu, select the specific image file types you want to see (e.g., "JPEG file," "PNG file").
  4. File Explorer will now only display files that match those image types.

Clearing Filters

To remove a filter and see all files again:

  • Click the filter arrow on the column you filtered.
  • Look for an option like "Clear filter from..." and select it.
  • Alternatively, uncheck all selected filter options.
