Why Does My Film Have Lines?

Published in Film Photography 3 mins read

The lines on your film are most likely pressure marks, caused by physical stress on the film either before, during, or after exposure.

Understanding Pressure Marks

Pressure marks are unwanted lines or patterns that appear on developed film. They result from localized pressure or stress applied to the film emulsion. These marks can manifest in various forms, including:

  • Straight lines: Often caused by the film rubbing against parts of the camera or cassette.
  • Curved lines: Similar to straight lines, but with a curved shape.
  • Fingerprints: Resulting from direct contact with the film.
  • Other irregular patterns: Dependent on the source and nature of the pressure.

Causes of Pressure Marks

Several factors can contribute to pressure marks on film:

  • Camera Issues:
    • Film advance mechanism: A faulty or poorly maintained mechanism can apply undue pressure as the film is advanced.
    • Light seals: Deteriorated or improperly installed light seals can create friction.
    • Dirty camera interior: Grit or debris inside the camera can scratch or press against the film.
  • Cassette Problems:
    • Damaged cassette: A bent or damaged cassette can put pressure on the film within.
    • Poorly loaded cassette: Incorrect loading can cause tight winding or uneven pressure.
  • Processing Errors:
    • Automatic processors: Improperly calibrated rollers or guides can scratch or mark the film during development.
    • Manual processing: Rough handling or incorrect use of reels can damage the emulsion.
  • Handling Issues:
    • Improper loading/unloading: Applying excessive force when loading or unloading the film.
    • Fingerprints: Touching the film surface with bare hands.

Appearance of Pressure Marks

The appearance of pressure marks can vary depending on when the pressure was applied:

  • Before processing: Pressure applied before development usually increases the density of the film in the affected area, resulting in darker lines or marks on the negative and lighter lines on the print.
  • After processing: Scratches or abrasions applied after development will appear as lighter lines on the negative and darker lines on the print.

Troubleshooting

To prevent or minimize pressure marks:

  • Maintain your camera: Regularly clean and service your camera, especially the film advance mechanism and light seals.
  • Use high-quality cassettes: Avoid using damaged or cheap cassettes.
  • Load and unload film carefully: Follow the camera's instructions and avoid applying excessive force.
  • Handle film with care: Avoid touching the film surface with bare hands. Use lint-free gloves when handling negatives.
  • Consider professional processing: If you suspect your processing equipment is the issue, consider using a professional lab.
