How to Add a Space Between Clips in Filmora

Published in Filmora Video Editing 3 mins read

To add a space (or gap) between clips in Filmora, you can select the clips located after the desired gap point on the timeline and drag them over.

Creating intentional spaces between clips is a common technique in video editing. It allows you to insert new elements, add transitions, or simply create a pause in the video flow, often appearing as a black screen. One effective way to achieve this in Filmora, as demonstrated in editing tutorials, is by manually adjusting the position of your existing clips on the timeline.

Adding Gaps in Your Filmora Timeline

This method involves directly manipulating the arrangement of clips on your editing timeline to create empty space where needed.

Step-by-Step Process to Create a Gap

Follow these steps to add a space between two clips:

  1. Identify the Gap Location: Determine precisely where on your timeline you want the space to appear, between which two clips.
  2. Select Subsequent Clips: Select these clips that are currently positioned after the point where you want the gap. This includes the clip that will come after the gap and all subsequent clips on that track. You can select multiple clips by clicking and dragging a selection box around them or by holding down Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) while clicking each clip.
  3. Drag to Create Space: Once the clips are selected, drag them over to the right along the timeline.
  4. Form the Gap: As you drag the selected clips, you will see an empty space forming between the clip preceding your selection and the first selected clip. Release the mouse button when the gap is the size you need. Now I've got a gap here.

What Appears in the Created Space?

The space you have just created on the timeline will typically play as a black screen during video playback, unless you fill it with other media.

Managing the Added Space

  • Filling the Gap: You can drag new video clips, images, titles, transitions, or other media into the created space.
  • Removing the Gap: Again if I want I can select the empty gap area on the timeline and delete. This will automatically close the space, causing the clips on either side to snap together.

This dragging method provides direct control over the size and placement of gaps within your Filmora project timeline.
