What is a PIP Joint?

Published in Finger Joint Anatomy 1 min read

A PIP joint, or Proximal Interphalangeal joint, is the hinge joint in your finger located between the proximal phalanx (the bone closest to your hand) and the middle phalanx (the bone in the middle of your finger).

Understanding the PIP Joint

The PIP joint is crucial for finger movement. It allows for bending (flexion) and straightening (extension) of the finger. However, it has limited side-to-side movement, making it susceptible to stiffness following injury.

Key Features of the PIP Joint:

  • Location: Between the proximal and middle phalanges of a finger.
  • Movement: Primarily flexion and extension. Limited lateral (side-to-side) movement.
  • Vulnerability: Prone to stiffness after injury due to its limited range of motion.

The PIP joint's relatively simple structure and limited range of motion make it a common site for injury and subsequent stiffness. Proper care and rehabilitation are essential for restoring full functionality after trauma.
