How do fingerprints home?

Published in Fingerprint Guidance 2 mins read

Fingerprints don't actually "home" in the traditional sense. However, they are often used for identification and background checks. If you need fingerprints for a specific purpose, you can get them done at home by following these steps:

  1. Purchase a pad of archival ink from an art store.
  2. Take a piece of card stock or regular printer paper.
  3. Press your fingertip into the ink pad.
  4. While the ink is still wet, carefully roll your finger onto the paper.
  5. Your fingerprint should be clearly left in ink.

You can also use a fingerprint kit, which includes ink, a card, and instructions. Many organizations allow you to take fingerprints at home, particularly during a pandemic. For example, the ATF allows fingerprint submissions for suppressor paperwork.

Additionally, some organizations provide instructions on how to take fingerprints at home for specific purposes, such as background checks for caregivers or home care services.

Note: While you can take your own fingerprints at home, it's important to note that these may not be accepted by all organizations. It's always best to check with the specific organization or agency to see what their requirements are.
