How do I delete recently closed tab history in Firefox?

Published in Firefox History 2 mins read

To quickly delete recently closed tabs history in Firefox, you can customize your toolbar for easy access to the History menu.

Here's how:

  1. Customize Toolbar: Right-click on the tab bar at the top of your Firefox window.
  2. Select "Customize Toolbar": A customization window will open.
  3. Drag the "History" button: Find the "History" button (it looks like a clock) and drag it to your toolbar, preferably near the URL bar for easy access.
  4. Click "Done": This will save your changes.

Now, to access and clear your recently closed tabs:

  1. Click the "History" button on your toolbar.
  2. Look for "Recently Closed Tabs" or "Recently Closed Windows".
  3. Unfortunately, Firefox doesn't offer a single-click "delete recently closed tabs history" option directly within the History menu. The "Recently Closed Tabs/Windows" section acts as a list of sessions and individual tabs that can be reopened. To truly remove them, you need to clear your entire browsing history.

Therefore, to clear the list completely:

  1. Click the "History" button on your toolbar.
  2. Click "Clear Recent History..." (or press Ctrl+Shift+Delete).
  3. Set the "Time range to clear" to "Everything."
  4. Ensure that "Browsing & Download History" is checked. Be aware that this will delete all your browsing history, not just the recently closed tabs. If you only want to clear the recently closed tabs, you may need to manually remove individual items from the full history view which is significantly more cumbersome.
  5. Click "OK".

Important Considerations:

  • Clearing Browsing History: Be aware that clearing your browsing history using the method above will delete all your browsing history, including websites you've visited, cookies, and cached images and files. This may log you out of websites and remove saved form data.
  • Alternative: Currently, Firefox doesn't offer a feature to selectively delete only the "Recently Closed Tabs" history. Third-party extensions might offer this functionality, but be cautious when installing extensions, ensuring they are from reputable sources to avoid security risks.
