What is Black Ich?

Published in Fish Diseases 3 mins read

Black Ich is a parasitic flatworm infestation that commonly affects tangs and surgeonfish in saltwater aquariums. The most noticeable symptom is the appearance of small black dots on the fish's body.

Understanding Black Ich

Black Ich is caused by turbellarian flatworms. These parasites attach themselves to the fish and feed on their skin, causing irritation and stress.

Symptoms of Black Ich

  • Small Black Dots: The most obvious sign is the presence of tiny black spots on the fish, often resembling grains of black pepper.
  • Scratching/Flashing: Infected fish may rub against rocks or other objects in the aquarium to relieve the itching caused by the parasites.
  • Lethargy: Affected fish may become less active and show a decreased appetite.
  • Clamped Fins: The fish may hold their fins close to their body.
  • Rapid Breathing: Stress from the parasite can cause rapid respiration.

Distinguishing Black Ich from Hyper-Melanization

It's important to differentiate Black Ich from hyper-melanization, particularly in clownfish. Hyper-melanization is a natural darkening of the skin, often in response to stress or injury, and it does not involve parasitic worms. Hyper-melanization typically presents as larger, irregularly shaped patches, rather than distinct dots.

Treatment for Black Ich

The most effective treatment for Black Ich is Praziquantel. This medication is available in various forms and should be administered according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Praziquantel: This is the generally accepted treatment, and is highly effective.
  • Freshwater Dips: While not a cure, freshwater dips can provide temporary relief and dislodge some of the parasites. This must be performed carefully to avoid shocking the fish.
  • Quarantine: Isolating the infected fish in a quarantine tank prevents the spread of the parasites to other tank inhabitants.
  • Hyposalinity: Lowering the salinity of the water in the quarantine tank can also help to weaken the parasites. This should only be done by experienced aquarists.

Prevention of Black Ich

  • Quarantine New Fish: Always quarantine new arrivals for several weeks to observe them for signs of disease before introducing them to the main tank.
  • Careful Observation: Regularly inspect your fish for any signs of illness.
  • Maintain Good Water Quality: Proper water parameters help to keep fish healthy and resistant to disease.
