How to Put Fish in Tank From Pet Store?

Published in Fishkeeping 3 mins read

Introducing new fish to your aquarium requires a careful acclimation process to minimize stress and ensure their survival. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Acclimate New Fish

  1. Dim the Lights: Before you even open the bag, dim the lights in your aquarium room. This will help reduce stress on the fish during the transition.

  2. Float the Bag: Place the unopened bag containing the fish into your aquarium. This allows the water temperature in the bag to gradually equalize with the water temperature of your tank. Let it float for about 15-30 minutes.

  3. Introduce Tank Water: Carefully open the bag, being careful not to tear it. Gently roll down the top edges to create a floating "cup." Over the next hour, gradually add small amounts (about 1/4 cup) of your aquarium water to the bag every 10-15 minutes. This slowly acclimates the fish to your tank's water chemistry (pH, hardness, etc.).

  4. Water Quality Check: Before introducing the fish to your tank, ensure your tank water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) are within acceptable limits. A properly cycled tank is essential.

  5. pH Level: Check the pH of both the bag water and your tank water. Significant differences in pH can shock the fish. Gradual acclimation helps minimize this.

  6. Release the Fish: After the acclimation process, gently net the fish from the bag and release them into your aquarium. Avoid pouring the water from the pet store bag into your tank, as it may contain unwanted contaminants or parasites.

  7. Observe and Monitor: For the next few days, closely observe your new fish for any signs of stress, disease, or aggression from existing tank inhabitants. Ensure they are eating and behaving normally.

Important Considerations:

  • Quarantine Tank (Recommended): Ideally, quarantine new fish in a separate tank for 2-4 weeks before introducing them to your main aquarium. This allows you to observe them for any signs of illness and treat them if necessary, preventing the spread of disease to your established fish.
  • Compatibility: Before purchasing any fish, research their compatibility with your existing fish species and tank conditions (water parameters, tank size, etc.).
  • Stress Reduction: Minimize any further disturbances in the tank for the first few days to allow the new fish to settle in.

By following these steps, you can significantly increase the chances of a successful introduction and a healthy, happy aquarium.
