Prior to 2014, direct flights to Southeast Asia did traverse Ukrainian airspace. However, following the downing of Malaysian MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, airlines, including Emirates, actively avoid that territory. As of September 2020, most flights to the UAE and Qatar fly over Romania and/or Bulgaria, continuing east over Turkey.
