Installing a T-mold transition strip typically involves securing a mounting track to the subfloor between the two flooring surfaces and then pressing the T-mold into the track.
Steps for Installing a T-Mold Transition Strip
T-molding is commonly used to bridge the gap between two hard flooring surfaces of the same height, such as laminate, wood, or tile. Here’s a breakdown of the installation process:
1. Prepare the Area
- Ensure the gap between the two flooring surfaces is clean and free of debris.
- Confirm the gap width is appropriate for the T-mold and its track.
2. Cut the Track to Size
- Measure the length of the transition you need.
- Cut the metal or plastic track to the measured length using appropriate tools (like a hacksaw for metal or fine-tooth saw for plastic).
3. Position the Track
- Center the cut track over the expansion gap between the two flooring materials.
- Mark the positions for drilling screws through the pre-drilled holes in the track.
4. Secure the Track
This is a critical step for ensuring the T-mold remains firmly in place.
- Drill the track in with 6 by 5/8 screws. These screws help anchor the track securely to the subfloor.
- Additionally, we recommend applying premium polyurethane construction adhesive onto the track for additional hold. Applying adhesive to the underside of the track before screwing it down provides extra bonding strength, preventing the track from loosening over time.
5. Install the T-Mold
- Align the T-mold over the secured track.
- Press the T-mold firmly down into the track until it clicks or snaps into place along its entire length. You may need to use a rubber mallet to gently tap it down, ensuring it is fully seated.
By following these steps, including the recommended method of drilling the track with screws and applying adhesive, you can achieve a secure and durable T-mold transition between your flooring surfaces.
