How to Install Transition Metal Strips

Published in Flooring Installation 3 mins read

Installing transition metal strips is a straightforward process typically involving preparation, measuring, cutting, fastening the base, and securing the strip itself.

Here's how to install transition metal strips:

Transition metal strips are essential for creating a smooth, safe, and visually appealing bridge between different types of flooring at doorways or in open spaces. They cover the gap, protect the edges of the flooring materials, and prevent tripping hazards.

The installation process generally follows these steps:

Step 1: Prepare Your Subfloor

Before you begin installing the transition strip, ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level where the strip will be placed. Remove any debris, old adhesive, or fasteners. A clean and prepared surface is crucial for the proper adhesion or fastening of the transition strip rail.

Step 2: Measure the Length of the Doorway

Accurately measure the width of the doorway or the opening where the transition strip will be installed. Use a tape measure to get the exact length needed. It's often best to measure directly at the point where the strip will sit.

Step 3: Cut the Transition Strip

Using the measurement obtained, carefully cut the main transition strip to the correct length. Use a saw appropriate for cutting metal, ensuring a clean and straight cut. Safety glasses and gloves should be worn when cutting.

Step 4: Cut the Metal Rail

Most metal transition strips come with a separate metal rail or track that attaches directly to the subfloor. Cut this metal rail to the same length as the transition strip you just cut. This rail serves as the base that holds the decorative or functional top strip in place.

Step 5: Screw or Glue the Rail to the Subfloor

Now, it's time to secure the metal rail to the subfloor. You have two primary options for fastening:

  • Screwing: If your subfloor is wood or concrete, you can drill pilot holes through the rail and into the subfloor, then secure it using appropriate screws. This method provides a strong, permanent hold.
  • Gluing: For certain subfloor types or situations where drilling isn't feasible, you can use a strong construction adhesive specifically designed for flooring or metal. Apply the adhesive to the back of the rail and press it firmly into place on the subfloor. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for curing time.

Ensure the rail is positioned correctly to bridge the gap between the two flooring surfaces, typically centered over the seam.

Step 6: Place the Transition Strip

With the metal rail securely fastened to the subfloor, the final step is to place the transition strip onto or into the rail. Many metal transition strips are designed to snap or press firmly into the rail. Align the strip carefully and press down along its length until it locks into place.

Once the strip is seated correctly in the rail, the installation is complete, providing a smooth and finished transition between your flooring materials.
