How to use a fly threader?

Published in Fly Fishing Tools 3 mins read

A fly threader simplifies the process of threading tippet or leader through the eye of a fishing fly. Here's a straightforward guide on how to use one:

Steps to Use a Fly Threader:

  1. Position the Fly: Hold the fly securely, so the hook eye is accessible.
  2. Insert the Threader: Take your fly threader and guide the thin wire or loop end through the eye of the fly.
  3. Thread the Tippet: Insert the tippet or leader through the loop or opening of the threader, as explained in the reference video, "...And it should push right through the eye the fly. And off you go you come through bone. And your fly is threaded."
  4. Pull through Once the tippet is through the threader you carefully pull the threader back through the fly eye, pulling the tippet/leader with it.
  5. Remove the Threader: Carefully remove the threader, leaving the tippet threaded through the eye of the fly.

Types of Fly Threaders

While the basic operation remains similar, there are different types of fly threaders, mainly the wire type and the magnetic type like that shown in the reference:

  • Wire Loop Threaders: These feature a small loop of fine wire that passes through the fly eye. You thread your tippet through the wire loop and pull it back through.
  • Magnetic Threaders: These use a magnetic end to help guide the tippet through the eye of the fly. This is what is shown in the video review, "Magnetic Fly Threader: Review - YouTube".

Benefits of using a fly threader

  • Ease of Use Helps those with less dexterity.
  • Faster threading Especially useful in low light or when your hands are cold and numb.
  • Small Fly Assistance: Ideal for small flies where the eye is hard to see and access.
  • Reduced Frustration: Makes a fiddly process much easier and quicker.

Tips for Success

  • Gentle Handling: Avoid bending the thin wire or damaging the magnetic end.
  • Right Size Threader: Make sure the threader is appropriate for the size of fly you are using.
  • Practice: It can take a few times to get used to using a threader but soon you will be using it with ease.
  • Read Your Instruction: Some threaders come with instructions. Read these carefully before you use your new tool.

By following these simple steps, you can effectively use a fly threader to quickly and efficiently thread your fishing flies.
