How Do You Know When Dried Oranges Are Done?

Published in Food Preservation 2 mins read

You'll know dried orange slices are done when they are firm to the touch, feel brittle, and there's no visible moisture remaining in the orange segments.

Once dried, the oranges should be removed from the oven (or dehydrator) and placed on a cooling rack. This allows air to circulate and helps them cool completely and become even crispier.

Here's a breakdown of what to look for:

  • Firmness: The slices should not be pliable or bend easily. They should be relatively stiff.
  • Brittleness: They should feel slightly brittle, almost like a chip. Be careful, as they can break if handled roughly.
  • No Moisture: Visually inspect the segments. There should be no visible moisture droplets or a sticky feel. All the fleshy parts should appear dry and translucent. If you see any moisture, continue the drying process.

If your oranges aren't quite done, you'll notice they'll still be somewhat soft or leathery to the touch. Return them to the oven or dehydrator and check them periodically until they reach the desired dryness. Remember that oven temperatures can vary, so monitoring the oranges closely is key.
