Vacuum sealing is a great way to preserve food and other items by removing air from a package, which helps to extend shelf life. While different models of vacuum sealers may have slight variations, the basic process often involves similar steps.
To vacuum seal using a typical vacuum sealer, follow these general instructions:
Essential Steps for Vacuum Sealing
- Prepare Your Pouch: Place the item you wish to seal inside a compatible vacuum sealer pouch. Ensure the opening of the pouch is clean and free of moisture or food debris, as this can prevent a proper seal. Leave enough space at the top of the pouch for the sealing process.
- Position the Pouch: Place the open end of the pouch into the vacuum channel or chamber of the vacuum sealer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the pouch lies flat and is correctly positioned.
- Close and Lock the Lid: Lower the lid of the vacuum sealer. You need to lock it by pressing either side. You should hear both locks click. This secures the pouch and the lid, creating the necessary seal around the vacuum channel.
- Initiate the Vacuum and Seal Cycle: Now press the vacuum seal button to start the motor. Different machines may have different buttons (e.g., "Vacuum & Seal," "Seal Only," "Vacuum"). Press the appropriate button for vacuum sealing.
- Monitor the Process: The red light will illuminate, and the pouch will begin to deflate. The machine will vacuum out the air until the desired vacuum level is reached. Once the vacuuming is complete, the machine will automatically switch to the sealing function, creating a heat seal across the open end of the pouch.
- Remove the Sealed Pouch: Once the cycle is finished (lights may change or turn off, and the motor will stop), carefully open the lid of the vacuum sealer and remove your now vacuum-sealed pouch. Check the seal to ensure it is complete and airtight.
Tips for Successful Vacuum Sealing
- Don't Overfill: Leave at least 2-3 inches of space at the top of the pouch.
- Keep it Clean: Ensure the sealing area of the pouch is dry and clean. Moisture or food particles can compromise the seal.
- Pre-Freeze Liquids: For liquids or moist foods, consider freezing them slightly before vacuum sealing to prevent liquid from being pulled into the machine.
- Protect Sharp Edges: Wrap items with sharp edges (like bones or pasta shapes) in a paper towel or small piece of material before placing them in the pouch to prevent punctures.
Following these steps, including properly locking the lid and pressing the designated button, will help you successfully vacuum seal your items.
