Is Corn Bran a Grain?

Published in Food science 1 min read

No, corn bran, by itself, is not considered a whole grain but is a part of one.

Corn bran is the outer layer of the corn kernel. A whole grain includes the bran, germ, and endosperm. Refined grains have had the bran and germ removed, leaving only the endosperm. Corn bran is a byproduct of milling corn when producing refined corn products. It includes the pedicel (tip cap) of the corn kernel. When the entire kernel, including the bran, germ, and endosperm, is consumed, it is considered a whole grain.
