How long does chicken oil last?

Published in Food Storage 1 min read

Rendered chicken fat, often called chicken oil, will last for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator in an airtight container and up to 6 months in the freezer.

To maximize the shelf life of your chicken oil, consider the following:

  • Storage Container: Always store rendered chicken fat in an airtight container. This prevents contamination and slows down oxidation, which leads to rancidity.

  • Refrigeration: Properly stored in the refrigerator, chicken oil remains usable for about two weeks.

  • Freezing: For longer storage, freezing is an excellent option. Chicken oil can last for up to six months in the freezer without significant degradation in quality.

  • Signs of Spoilage: Watch for these signs that your chicken oil has gone bad:

    • Off Odor: A rancid or sour smell.
    • Discoloration: Significant changes in color.
    • Mold: Any visible mold growth.

If you notice any of these signs, discard the chicken oil.
