How Do You Get Cracked Toes?

Published in Foot Health 2 mins read

Cracked toes, also known as fissures, are often caused by skin that is either too dry or too moist.

Causes of Cracked Toes

There are two main reasons why you might get cracked toes:

1. Dry Skin

  • Lack of Moisture: Dry skin lacks sufficient hydration, making it brittle and prone to cracking. This is especially common in people who frequently walk barefoot or wear open-toed shoes, exposing their feet to the elements.

2. Moist Skin & Infections

  • Excessive Moisture: Conversely, excessively moist skin creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. This can lead to infections that cause skin to crack, particularly between the toes. Wearing shoes without socks, or shoes and socks that don't allow for adequate ventilation, increases the risk of moisture buildup.

  • Fungal and Bacterial Infections: Infections like athlete's foot (Tinea pedis) are a common cause of cracked skin between the toes. These infections thrive in warm, moist environments. The cracked skin itself can also become infected, worsening the condition.

Preventing Cracked Toes

To avoid cracked toes, focus on maintaining healthy skin moisture levels. This includes:

  • Moisturizing: Regularly apply a good quality moisturizer, especially to your feet.
  • Proper Footwear: Wear breathable shoes and socks, especially in warm or humid conditions. Avoid wearing shoes without socks.
  • Hygiene: Keep your feet clean and dry, particularly between the toes.
  • Treating Infections: If you suspect a fungal or bacterial infection, seek treatment from a doctor or dermatologist.
