Fraction tiles allow you to visually understand fraction division by comparing the sizes of the fractions involved. You can determine how many times one fraction fits into another.
Here's how you divide fractions using fraction tiles:
-
Represent the Fractions: Use fraction tiles to represent both the dividend (the fraction being divided) and the divisor (the fraction you are dividing by).
-
Determine the Fit: See how many times the divisor tile fits into the dividend tile. This represents the quotient (the answer to the division problem).
Example:
Let's say you want to divide 1/4 by 1/3.
-
Represent 1/4 and 1/3: Place a 1/4 tile and a 1/3 tile.
-
Determine the Fit: The question is, "How much of the 1/3 tile fits inside the 1/4 tile?" The 1/3 tile does not fit completely into the 1/4 tile. However, if you visually compare the tiles, you'll find that the 1/3 tile occupies 3/4 of the space of the 1/4 tile. (From the reference video example.) Therefore, 1/4 รท 1/3 = 3/4.
