What is an Internal Frame?

Published in Frame Structures 3 mins read

An internal frame is a lightweight, supportive structure built inside a backpack or other container, providing rigidity and structure. Unlike external frames, which are visible and attached to the outside of the pack, internal frames are concealed within the bag's design. They typically consist of aluminum stays – long, flat bars – that run along the back panel, improving load distribution and comfort. This design makes the backpack more compact and easier to transport, for example, fitting easily into a car trunk or as checked luggage.

Types and Uses of Internal Frames

Internal frames are used in various applications:

Advantages of Internal Frames (in backpacks):

  • Compact Design: They allow for a more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing pack.
  • Improved Load Distribution: The internal frame helps to evenly distribute weight across your back.
  • Enhanced Comfort: This leads to better comfort, even when carrying heavy loads.
