How to Group Items in Freeform

Published in Freeform Organization 2 mins read

Grouping items in Freeform allows you to combine multiple objects on your board into a single unit, making them easier to move, resize, and manage together.

To group items in Freeform, you need to select the items you want to combine and then use the Arrange menu option.

Steps to Group Items

Follow these simple steps to group objects on your Freeform board:

  1. Open or Create a Board: Start by opening an existing Freeform board or creating a new one.
  2. Add Items: Add the items you wish to group to your board (shapes, text boxes, sticky notes, images, etc.).
  3. Select Multiple Items: You must select multiple items before you can group them. You can do this by:
    • Dragging a selection box around the items.
    • Tapping or clicking on one item, then holding down a modifier key (like Shift on Mac or iPad with keyboard) while tapping or clicking on other items to add them to the selection.
  4. Choose Group: With multiple items selected, choose Arrange > Group. This action combines the selected items into a single group object.

Once grouped, you can interact with the entire group as if it were a single item. For example, dragging one part of the group will move all items within that group together.

Why Group Items?

Grouping is useful for:

  • Keeping related visual elements together.
  • Moving complex layouts without disturbing the arrangement of individual components.
  • Applying formatting or resizing to multiple items simultaneously.

Ungrouping Items

If you need to separate items within a group later, simply select the grouped object and choose Arrange > Ungroup.
