France's official name in 1914 was the French Republic (République française).
During this time, France was governed by the French Third Republic. The Third Republic was established in 1870 after the fall of the Second French Empire and lasted until 1940, when France was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. France entered World War I on August 3, 1914.
