How do you prepare fresh grapefruit?

Published in Fruit Preparation 2 mins read

Preparing fresh grapefruit often involves separating the juicy segments from the bitter membrane. Here's a breakdown of one popular method:

  1. Slice the grapefruit in half: Begin by cutting the grapefruit in half using a sharp knife.

  2. Loosen the segments: Use a grapefruit knife or paring knife to run along the inside of each section, separating the flesh from the membrane. You want to cut along both sides of each segment.

  3. Remove the segments: Gently scoop out each segment with the knife. They should pop out easily. Avoid digging into the membrane, which is bitter.

  4. Enjoy: You can now enjoy the grapefruit segments.

Alternatively, you can use the "supreme" method:

  1. Cut off the ends: Slice off the top and bottom of the grapefruit to expose the flesh.

  2. Remove the peel: Stand the grapefruit on one flat end and carefully slice away the peel and white pith from top to bottom, following the curve of the fruit.

  3. Segment the grapefruit: Hold the peeled grapefruit over a bowl to catch the juices. Use a sharp knife to cut along one side of a segment, next to the membrane. Then, cut along the other side of the same segment, releasing it into the bowl. Repeat for each segment. This leaves behind only the membrane.

  4. Enjoy: Enjoy the supremed grapefruit segments.
