How to Disassemble an Executive Chair

Published in Furniture Disassembly 4 mins read

To disassemble an executive chair, you typically follow a step-by-step process, starting with the outer components and working inwards, as outlined in the following steps.

Understanding how to take apart your executive chair can be useful for repairs, moving, or disposal. The process usually involves detaching the base, cylinder, armrests, seat, and backrest.

1. Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary tools ready. This might include:

  • Screwdrivers (various types, e.g., Phillips, flathead)
  • Allen wrenches (often included with the chair)
  • Rubber mallet or hammer (for stubborn parts)
  • Gloves (optional, for grip and protection)
  • Pry bar or flathead screwdriver (for leverage)

Having the right tools makes the process smoother and prevents damage to the chair or injury to yourself.

2. Start With the Wheels and Base

Begin the disassembly by focusing on the chair's foundation.

  • Remove the Wheels: Casters (wheels) are often push-fitted into the base. You can usually pull them out firmly by hand or use a pry bar for leverage if they are stuck.
  • Detach the Base: The leg base is typically connected to the pneumatic cylinder. Sometimes it's just a snug fit; other times, it might require a firm pull or a gentle tap with a rubber mallet near the cylinder connection point underneath the base.

3. Remove the Cylinder

The gas lift cylinder is a crucial part and can sometimes be difficult to remove.

  • The cylinder connects the base to the seat mechanism. It is usually taper-fitted at both ends.
  • To remove it from the base, you might need to stand the base upright and tap around the cylinder's bottom connection point with a rubber mallet.
  • To remove it from the seat mechanism, you might need to flip the seat over and tap the top of the cylinder where it enters the mechanism.
  • Be patient, as cylinders can be tightly fitted.

4. Take Apart the Armrests

Next, move on to the armrests.

  • Armrests are typically attached to the seat and/or backrest using bolts or screws.
  • Locate the fasteners (often underneath the seat or on the side of the backrest) and use the appropriate screwdriver or Allen wrench to unscrew them.
  • Keep track of the fasteners you remove, perhaps by placing them in a small container.

5. Detach the Seat and Backrest

The final major steps involve separating the main seating components.

  • The seat and backrest might be attached to each other and to the control mechanism (which is connected to the cylinder).
  • Look for bolts or screws connecting the backrest to the seat or the mechanism.
  • Carefully unscrew all remaining fasteners that hold the seat and backrest components together and to the mechanism.
  • Once all fasteners are removed, the seat, backrest, and control mechanism should separate.

Following these steps allows you to successfully disassemble your executive chair into its core components.

Maintain Your Office Chair

Proper maintenance can extend the life of your office chair. Regularly check and tighten fasteners, clean upholstery, and lubricate moving parts like casters and the cylinder (if recommended by the manufacturer).
