Moving a divan bed requires careful preparation and handling to ensure both the bed and your home remain undamaged.
Divan beds typically consist of a base (often in two halves for larger sizes) and a mattress, sometimes with an attached headboard and/or legs. Unlike traditional bed frames that fully dismantle, a divan base is moved in larger sections.
Here are the key steps involved in moving your divan bed:
1. Prepare the Area
- Clear the Room: Remove furniture, rugs, and any obstacles from the path leading from the bedroom to the exit.
- Protect Your Home: Place moving blankets or floor protection along hallways and doorways to prevent scratches. Protect walls at corners or tight turns.
2. Dismantle Attachments
Before moving the base and mattress, you'll need to remove any attached components.
- Remove Headboard: If your divan has an attached headboard, detach it according to the manufacturer's instructions. This usually involves unscrewing bolts or disconnecting mounting brackets.
- Unscrew the Legs: As part of dismantling the bed, you should unscrew the legs.
- Manage Hardware: To avoid losing essential parts like screws, nuts, and bolts, it is crucial to place all the screws, nuts and bolts into a plastic bag. To keep track of which hardware belongs where, attach this bag to the bed so you don't misplace it. Further, with tape, attach the screws in their bag onto the leg or part that they belong to.
3. Separate and Protect Components
- Separate Base Halves: If your divan base is in two sections (common for double, king, and super king sizes), detach them. They are often held together by metal clips or bolts underneath.
- Remove Mattress: Take the mattress off the divan base.
- Protect Each Piece: Wrap the mattress in a protective mattress bag or plastic sheeting. Wrap the divan base sections, headboard, and legs (if not bagged with hardware) in moving blankets or bubble wrap to protect them from scuffs and tears during the move. Secure the wrapping with packing tape.
4. Move the Components
Moving the bulky base sections and mattress requires careful lifting and navigation.
- Lifting: Always lift with your legs, keeping your back straight. Divan bases can be heavy, so enlist help. For base sections, two people at either end is often best. For the mattress, one or two people can manage it depending on size and weight.
- Navigating: Move slowly and communicate with anyone helping you. Use the cleared path and protected surfaces. Tilt large base sections on their side to pass through doorways if necessary.
5. Load for Transport
- Place the heaviest items (divan base sections) on the bottom in the moving vehicle.
- Stack lighter items carefully, ensuring the mattress is flat or upright against a wall, well-supported to prevent bending.
- Use straps or ropes to secure all items and prevent shifting during transit.
6. Reassembly
Upon reaching your destination:
- Bring the components into the desired room.
- Position the base sections and connect them if necessary.
- Place the mattress on the base.
- Refer to the bagged hardware attached to the relevant parts to unscrew the legs and reattach them, and then reattach the headboard using the corresponding hardware.
By following these steps, including careful dismantling and organization of hardware as recommended, you can effectively move your divan bed.
