How to Apply Fusion Paint?

Published in Furniture Painting Guide 3 mins read

Applying Fusion Mineral Paint is a straightforward process known for its excellent adhesion and durable finish. The key steps involve proper surface preparation, careful application technique, and allowing adequate drying time.

1. Prepare Your Surface

Proper preparation is crucial for achieving the best results with Fusion paint. While it's known for its minimal prep, a clean and sound surface is always recommended.

  • Clean Thoroughly: Remove all dirt, grease, grime, and wax. A good degreaser like Fusion's TSP Alternative works well. Rinse the surface thoroughly afterward and let it dry completely.
  • Slight Scuff Sand (Optional but Recommended): For glossy or previously finished surfaces, a light scuff sand with fine-grit sandpaper (around 180-220 grit) helps create a bit of "tooth" for better adhesion. Clean off any sanding dust.
  • Address Bleed-Through: If you're painting a piece known to bleed tannins (like certain woods such as mahogany or oak), or if the surface has stains, apply a stain-blocking primer before painting.
  • Repair Imperfections: Fill any holes or dents and sand smooth before cleaning.

2. Apply the Paint

Fusion paint is designed for easy application and self-leveling.

  • Stir Well: Gently stir the paint before use. Avoid shaking, which can create bubbles.
  • Choose Your Tool: You can apply Fusion with a high-quality synthetic brush, a roller designed for smooth finishes, or a paint sprayer.
  • Brush Technique: When painting with a brush, focus on applying the paint smoothly and evenly in long, directional strokes. An important tip is to avoid continually pulling strokes back and forth or "overworking" the paint once it's on the surface. Apply the paint and then lay it off gently in one direction. Over-brushing can sometimes lead to brush marks or affect the finish.
  • Thin, Even Coats: Apply thin, even coats rather than one thick coat. Thin coats dry faster, level better, and build a stronger finish.
  • Number of Coats: Most projects require two coats for full coverage, though sometimes one is sufficient or a third might be needed for dramatic colour changes.

3. Allow for Proper Drying & Curing

Understanding the difference between drying and curing is important for durability.

  • Dry to the Touch: Fusion paint is typically dry to the touch within 30-60 minutes.
  • Recoat Time: You can usually apply a second coat after about 1-2 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.
  • Curing Time: The paint continues to harden and strengthen over time. Fusion achieves about 95% of its full cure after 21 days. During this curing period, be gentle with the painted surface to avoid scratches or damage.

4. Optional: Add a Topcoat

For high-traffic areas or surfaces that will see a lot of wear (like tabletops or kitchen cabinets), adding a topcoat can provide extra protection. Fusion offers various topcoats like Tough Coat or clear waxes. Apply according to the product instructions after the paint has dried sufficiently.

By following these steps, you can achieve a beautiful, durable finish with Fusion Mineral Paint.
