How to Remove Scratches from a Desk?

Published in Furniture Repair 2 mins read

You can often remove or minimize scratches on a desk using simple household ingredients like oil and vinegar.

One effective method for addressing scratches on a desk involves using a mixture of oil and vinegar. This common home remedy can help conceal minor surface damage and restore the appearance of your desk.

Using an Oil and Vinegar Solution

This technique leverages the properties of oil to penetrate the wood and vinegar to potentially help clean and prepare the surface, making scratches less visible.

For general scratches:

  • Combine half a cup of white or cider vinegar with ½ cup of cooking oil.
  • Mix the solution thoroughly.
  • Rub onto the scratch using a microfibre cloth. Apply the mixture directly to the affected area, working it into the scratch.
  • Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.

For minor surface scratches:

  • Instead of vinegar, try combining oil with lemon juice.
  • Apply this mixture to the minor scratches in the same way, rubbing it in with a cloth.
  • Wipe clean afterward.

This method is generally best suited for wood desks and may not be effective on all types of finishes or for deep gouges. Always test the solution on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't negatively affect the desk's finish.
