How to Fix Garage Door Opener Sensor?

Published in Garage Door Repair 3 mins read

Fixing garage door opener sensors typically involves realigning them so they can properly "see" each other. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Locate the Sensors: These are usually small boxes or lenses mounted on either side of the garage door, near the floor. One sensor has an amber LED (sending) and the other has a green LED (receiving).

  2. Check the Sensor Lights: The amber LED should be on solid. The green LED should also be on solid. If either is blinking or off, it indicates a misalignment or other issue.

  3. Loosen the Receiving Sensor: Gently loosen the wing nut (or screw, depending on the model) that secures the receiving sensor (the one with the green LED).

  4. Adjust the Sensor: Carefully adjust the receiving sensor until the green LED is glowing steadily. The aim is to ensure it's pointing directly at the sending sensor.

  5. Tighten the Receiving Sensor: Once the green LED is solid, tighten the wing nut to secure the sensor in its new position. Be careful not to overtighten.

  6. Adjust the Sending Sensor (If Necessary): If the green LED was blinking or off and adjusting the receiving sensor didn't solve the problem, repeat steps 3-5 with the sending sensor (the one with the amber LED).

  7. Test the Garage Door: Use your remote control or wall-mounted button to try closing the garage door. If the sensors are properly aligned, the door should close smoothly. If the door reverses or doesn't close, repeat the alignment process.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Obstructions: Make sure there are no obstructions blocking the path between the sensors, such as spiderwebs, debris, or stored items.
  • Loose Wires: Inspect the wires connected to the sensors for any signs of damage or looseness. Secure any loose connections.
  • Sunlight Interference: Direct sunlight can sometimes interfere with the sensors. Try shielding the sensors from direct sunlight, especially during certain times of the day.
  • Damaged Sensors: If the sensors are physically damaged, they may need to be replaced.
  • Power Surge: Sometimes a power surge can affect the performance of the sensors. Try unplugging the garage door opener for a few minutes, then plugging it back in.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve most garage door opener sensor issues. If problems persist, consult a qualified garage door technician.
